USA Permanent Residency (PR – Green Card)

Live the American Dream – Become a U.S. Permanent Resident

The United States of America is not just a land of opportunities—it is a land of possibilities. For individuals who wish to build a long-term future in the U.S., securing Permanent Residency (PR)—commonly known as the Green Card—is the ultimate goal. A Green Card allows you to live and work anywhere in the U.S. permanently, enjoy nearly all rights of a U.S. citizen, and pave the way to citizenship.

At Oriens Immigration, we provide professional consultation and complete support for your U.S. Permanent Residency process. Whether you are applying through family sponsorship, employment, or special immigration programs, our expert team ensures every step is smooth, legal, and stress-free.

What is a Green Card?

A Green Card is an official document issued by the U.S. government that grants permanent resident status to a foreign national. As a Green Card holder, you can live and work in the U.S. indefinitely. After a specific period (usually 5 years), you may also be eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship.

There are several ways to obtain a Green Card, each with its own set of requirements, timelines, and benefits. Whether you’re a skilled professional, a family member of a U.S. citizen, or an investor, Oriens Immigration will guide you through the most suitable path for you.

A U.S. Green Card allows you to live and work permanently in the United States, with a pathway to citizenship. Whether through employment, family, or investment – Oriens Immigration guides you at every step.

Types of USA Work Visas

Family-Based Green Card

This is one of the most common routes to obtaining U.S. PR. U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents can sponsor certain family members.
-Immediate Relatives of U.S. Citizens:
Includes spouses, unmarried children under 21, and parents of U.S. citizens. These applicants have the shortest processing time, as they are not subject to visa caps.
- Family Preference Categories:
Includes siblings of U.S. citizens, married children, and spouses/children of Green Card holders. These categories are subject to annual quotas and can take several years based on your country of origin.

Employment-Based Green Card (EB-1 to EB-5)

Professionals with job offers or extraordinary skills may be eligible under one of the five employment-based categories.
- EB-1: For individuals with extraordinary ability in sciences, arts, education, business, or athletics. Also includes outstanding professors and multinational executives. Priority is given to high-achieving professionals.
- EB-2: For professionals holding advanced degrees or those with exceptional ability. National Interest Waivers are also available in this category.
- EB-3: For skilled workers, professionals, and unskilled workers with a permanent job offer from a U.S. employer. - EB-4: For special immigrants including religious workers, Afghan/Iraqi translators, and other specific groups.
- EB-5: For investors willing to invest $800,000–$1.05 million in a U.S. commercial enterprise that creates jobs for American workers. This leads to direct PR for the investor and their family.

Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery

The Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, also known as the Green Card Lottery, is designed for nationals from countries with low immigration rates to the U.S. Every year, around 55,000 visas are granted through a lottery system. Eligibility is based on country of origin and educational or work qualifications.

Asylum or Refugee Status

Individuals granted asylum or refugee status in the U.S. may apply for a Green Card after one year of residing in the country. This is a humanitarian pathway for people facing persecution due to race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular group.

Special Categories

Some other less common ways to obtain PR include:

- Long-time residents (under Registry provisions)
- Cuban Adjustment Act - Haitian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act
- Lautenberg parolees

Benefits of Becoming a U.S. Permanent Resident

Live and Work Anywhere in the U.S.

As a Green Card holder, you have the legal right to live in any state, work for any employer, and change jobs freely. You’re not tied to a single employer or visa status like temporary work visas.

Pathway to U.S. Citizenship

Green Card holders are eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship after 5 years (3 years if married to a U.S. citizen). Naturalization opens the door to a U.S. passport, voting rights, and full legal protections.

Sponsor Family Members

Once you become a permanent resident, you can sponsor your spouse and unmarried children to come and live in the U.S. with you under family-based immigration categories.

Access to Benefits & Legal Protections

Green Card holders are entitled to a range of social benefits such as healthcare (after certain conditions), education, and social security. They also receive most of the legal protections that citizens enjoy under U.S. law.

Travel In and Out of the U.S.

You can travel abroad and return to the U.S. without applying for a new visa, as long as you follow the travel rules and don’t stay outside the country for extended periods without reentry documentation.

Eligibility Requirements for U.S. PR

Valid Sponsorship or Qualification Category

You must fall under one of the eligible Green Card categories such as family, employment, refugee/asylee, investor, or lottery winner. A sponsor (individual or employer) is typically required.

Clean Immigration & Criminal History

You must have a clean immigration record with no major violations or overstay issues. Serious criminal offenses may lead to ineligibility, but some cases can be waived under legal provisions.

Medical Examination & Vaccination

All Green Card applicants must undergo a medical exam conducted by a certified U.S. physician and receive required vaccinations as per CDC guidelines.

Affidavit of Support (if required)

In family-based categories, your sponsor may need to file Form I-864, showing they have sufficient income or assets to support you so you won’t become a public charge.

Required Documents for Green Card Application

1. Valid Passport – A passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended entry into the U.S.

2. Petition Approval (Form I-130/I-140/I-526, etc.) – Proof that your petition for a Green Card has been approved by USCIS.

3. Birth Certificate & Identity Documents – Certified copies of your birth certificate, national ID, and marriage certificate (if applicable).

4. Medical Examination Report – Form I-693 completed by a U.S. Civil Surgeon.
